Knowledge Preservation Network

Every year, thousands of senior executives and professionals retire from organisations carrying something irreplaceable: decades of hard-won experience, industry insight, leadership wisdom, and contextual knowledge that simply cannot be found in a textbook, an MBA programme, or a consulting report.

Most of that knowledge quietly disappears. Organisations lose it when leaders retire. The next generation of leaders navigates without it. And the people who hold it are left without a meaningful way to transfer it or to be compensated for doing so.

The ExecSage Knowledge Preservation Network was built to change that.

KPN is a structured, paid mentorship programme that matches experienced and retired senior executives with motivated emerging leaders, rising professionals, and organisations seeking domain expertise. Every match is purposeful. Every engagement is structured. Every mentor is compensated fairly for the knowledge they bring.

This is not informal mentorship. This is not a volunteer programme.

This is a premium, professionally managed knowledge transfer service structured enough to produce real outcomes, and flexible enough to honour the value of genuine human connection and experience.

The structure below is the standard KPN framework. It is flexible by design, the best mentorship relationships develop their own rhythm. But the framework ensures both parties arrive prepared, sessions are productive, and commitments are honoured.

  • Before Each Session:
    • Mentee submits a brief pre-session note: key challenge, specific question, and what they want to leave with
    • Mentor reviews and prepares relevant context, examples, and frameworks
    • ExecSage provides a session guide with a suggested structure for the 90 minutes
  • During Each Session — 90 Minutes:
    • First 15 minutes: Check-in and context-setting — where are you, what has changed since last time
    • 60 minutes: Deep work on the mentee’s challenge or goal — the heart of the session
    • Final 15 minutes: Actions, commitments, and next session focus — what will you do before we meet again
  • After Each Session:
    • Mentee sends a brief post-session note to ExecSage confirming actions committed
    • ExecSage logs the session and checks in with both parties
    • Any follow-up resources or introductions arranged within 48 hours

How KPN works?

Not informal coffee chats. A professional engagement.

Every KPN match is made by ExecSage based on domain, career stage, industry, and fit.
Every session follows a clear framework.
Every mentor is fairly compensated.
Every mentee is genuinely supported.

Application & Profile

Both mentors and mentees complete a structured application. Mentors describe their career, domain expertise, industries, leadership philosophy, and what they are seeking in a mentee. Mentees describe their goals, their current challenges, the domain they need support in, and what they are ready to commit to.

ExecSage Vetting

ExecSage Vetting

Mentors are vetted through the same standard as our Fractional Executive bench, career review, a structured conversation with ExecSage, and reference verification. Mentees are reviewed for seriousness of intent and readiness. Not every applicant is accepted. The quality of a match depends entirely on the quality of the participants.

Purposeful Matching

ExecSage matches mentors and mentees based on domain, career stage, industry context, personality, and the specific goals of the mentee. We do not use algorithms. Every match involves ExecSage’s judgment and relationship knowledge. We are looking for genuine alignment not just credential proximity.

Introduction & Fit Conversation

Before any formal engagement begins, mentor and mentee have a brief introductory conversation facilitated by ExecSage. Both parties must confirm the fit. If either party does not feel aligned, we rematch. Comfort and trust are prerequisites for the work that follows.

Structured Engagement Begins

Once confirmed, the engagement begins according to the agreed schedule. Sessions are structured with clear objectives, pre-session preparation, and post-session action items. ExecSage provides a session framework to guide the relationship while preserving its authenticity.

Ongoing Quality Oversight

ExecSage conducts periodic check-ins with both parties throughout the engagement. We monitor progress, address any issues, and ensure the relationship is delivering genuine value. Quality is never assumed, it is verified at every stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a typical KPN engagement last?

Most KPN engagements run for 3–6 months. Some continue for a year or more as the relationship deepens. There is no minimum commitment beyond the initial package if you begin with single sessions. Monthly packages are recommended for the best outcomes and require a month-by-month renewal — there is no long lock-in.

Can organisations sponsor a team member’s KPN engagement?

Yes. Organisations can sponsor KPN engagements for team members as part of a leadership development investment. We will invoice the organisation directly and ensure the mentee’s sessions are structured around both their personal goals and their organisation’s development objectives. This is also available as a succession planning tool when transferring institutional knowledge from a departing executive to their successor.

Is the KPN available to people outside Canada?

Sessions are delivered virtually and ExecSage welcomes mentors and mentees from across Canada. International mentors and mentees with Canadian industry context may also be considered. If you are based outside Canada and interested in participating, reach out directly and we will discuss whether the fit makes sense.

As a mentee, how do I choose the right mentor tier?

The Practitioner tier (10–15 years experience) is well suited for early-career professionals and rising managers navigating their first senior responsibilities. The Executive tier (VP to SVP level) suits mid-career leaders navigating complex organisations, teams, and strategic decisions. The Luminary tier (C-Suite / Board level) is for leaders dealing with board dynamics, enterprise-scale decisions, succession, or exit planning. When in doubt, book a Discovery Session and we will help you identify the right fit.

Is everything confidential?

Completely. Every KPN engagement is governed by ExecSage’s confidentiality standard. What is shared in sessions stays in sessions.

Mentors do not share mentee information. Mentees do not share mentor insights without permission. ExecSage holds all engagement data with full discretion. A formal confidentiality provision is included in every engagement agreement.

What happens if the mentor-mentee fit is not right?

We rematch. Before any formal engagement begins, both parties confirm fit in an introductory conversation. If at any point within the first two sessions the relationship is not working, ExecSage will facilitate a rematch at no additional cost. Our vetting process makes poor fit rare — but we stand behind every introduction.

How do I know if I am ready to be a mentor?

If you have led at a senior level, navigated real complexity, made decisions with significant consequences, and emerged with insight you wish you had access to earlier in your career — you are ready. Mentoring does not require perfection. It requires honesty, experience, and genuine interest in another person’s growth. The structure ExecSage provides means you are never going in unprepared

What does ExecSage do between sessions?

We are not passive intermediaries. Between sessions, ExecSage checks in with both parties, logs session outcomes, and flags any issues that need attention.
We handle payment processing, match administration, and any rescheduling. If a mentor has follow-up resources, connections, or introductions to make, we facilitate that within 48 hours of the session. The relationship is yours. The infrastructure is ours.

Can I engage multiple mentors?

Yes, if your development needs span multiple domains. A mentee might work with a Practitioner-level mentor on day-to-day leadership challenges and a Luminary-level mentor on longer-term strategic and career questions.

ExecSage will coordinate to ensure the engagements complement rather than duplicate each other.

What happens at the end of an engagement?

A  At the conclusion of a KPN engagement, ExecSage sends both parties a brief outcome review, what was worked on, what shifted, and what the mentee is taking forward.

This becomes part of the KPN Outcome Record, which is shared with the mentee and available for organisational sponsors. It is also an invitation to renew, refer, or close cleanly — whatever serves the mentee best.
